Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is located on Roosevelt Island in New York City. The park, designed by architect Louis I. Kahn, is free to the public.

Its name derives from a January 6, 1941 speech delivered by President Roosevelt, in which he described his vision for a world founded on four essential human freedoms: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

  • November through March, 9am - 5pm

    April through October, 9am - 7pm

The park, designed by architect Louis I. Kahn, is a worldclass, iconic memorial to NY's own Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the power of architecture. The park is sited directly across the East River from the United Nations and derives its name from the January 6, 1941, speech delivered by President Roosevelt in which he described his vision for a world founded on four essential human freedoms:  freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.  Construction of the Park, following Louis Kahn's original design, began March 29, 2010, and was completed on budget and on schedule in September 2012. The dedication ceremony was held on October 17, 2012, with President William J. Clinton, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Ambassador vanden Heuvel participating. At the ceremony FDR Four Freedoms Park was officially designated a New York State Park. The Park opened to the public on October 24, 2012.  Under a cooperative agreement, the Four Freedoms Conservancy operated and maintained the park. In late 2020, New York State Parks assumed full responsibility for operating the park.

Join the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in partnership with Black Gotham Experience (BGX) and the Four Freedoms Park Conservancy, for Battle in the Margins, a new theatrical production exploring Black life in New York City during the American Revolution. Presented through a series of original plays by playwrights Lauren Smith, Steven Sapp, and Cyrus Aaron, this production centers the experiences, resistance, and contributions of the African Diaspora in shaping early American history, highlighting stories often left out of the nation's founding narrative.
