Civil War Saturday in the navy yard

Saturday, August 15, 2026 10:00 AM - 03:00 PM

Stop by the site's navy yard to hear authentic stories about the Civil War while visiting with living history presenters! The day offers stories of the US army and navy with loyalties strained on both sides. At Sackets Harbor Navy Yard, when war broke out, US navy Commandant Josiah Tattnall near retirement resigned to fight for his native state Georgia. Tours in the historic site's Commandant's House help us imagine how his family lived before their untimely departure, some fleeing to Georgia, and Tattnall himself to the Confederate States navy. Those stories reflect what changed people's lives forever. In Sackets Harbor, John Hadley's story stands out. A young local African American, John joined the 8th US Colored Infantry. Wounded twice, he mustered-out at war's end in Texas. Discover these stories and more on Saturday with the Civil War re-enactors.
