Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
In July 1680, New Paltz Patentee, Christian Deyo, purchased an enslaved African man named Jack from New York City physician, Hartman Wessels. Nine years later, Christian's son, Pierre Deyo, purchased an enslaved African girl named Betty from a trafficker in New York City named James Barré. These are the first recorded purchases of enslaved Africans in the community of New Paltz, and Jack and Betty are the earliest recorded African residents of the town. On Sunday, August 16 from 2-3 p.m. at the Ulster Welcome Center in Highland, Ulster County Historian Eddie Moran will guide attendees through documentary sources to discuss what we know about Jack and Betty, and what their lives in New Paltz may have been like. All Walkway Connections events are free to attend and appropriate for all ages. Walkway Connections is supported in part by the Maurice D. Hinchey Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.

Every Wednesday through August 26, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation welcome an eclectic mix of talented local musicians at the Walkway Over the Hudson's Ulster Welcome Center Plaza with free live music from 6-7 p.m. Concerts represent a variety of genres including blues, jazz, pop, country and Irish music. New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation present a free, live concert prior to Walkway At Night. All concerts take place at the Ulster Welcome Center Plaza (87 Haviland Road, Highland, NY 12528) and are appropriate for all ages. On Friday, August 21, enjoy the Lara Hope Band. Roots Rock n' Roll & Twang. Winner of an Ameripolitan Music Award, and named the "Best Up-And-Coming Band" by New York's Hudson Valley Magazine, Lara Hope Band is the Northeast's premier Roots Rock n' Roll outfit.

Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
On Friday, August 21 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the East Gate Plaza in Poughkeepsie, Caitlin Chung of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater will make it easy for kids to connect forest ecology and the growth patterns of various trees to the properties of their woods. She'll then talk about how shipwrights utilize these different woods for different purposes when building wooden boats, drawing examples from the construction and ongoing maintenance of the Sloop Clearwater. Caitlin is an environmental educator with the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. She grew up in Albany, studied Environmental Studies at Yale University, and is happy to be back in the Hudson Valley. All Walkway Connections events are free to attend and appropriate for all ages. Walkway Connections is supported in part by the Maurice D. Hinchey Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area and The M&T Charitable Foundation.

Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
Join us on Sunday, September 20 from 2-3 p.m. at the Ulster Welcome Center in Highland to learn all about Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz. Historic Huguenot Street is a 10-acre National Historic Landmark District, where visitors experience over 300 years of history. Examining three historic structures along Huguenot Street, "Three Centuries, Three Cultures" explores the multicultural history of a unique American settlement, known today as New Paltz, New York: the Esopus Munsee wigwam represents the strength and sacrifices of this region's Indigenous peoples from pre-colonial America to the present day; the 1717 French Church teaches the European colonial origins of the multicultural Hudson Valley; and the Jacob Hasbrouck House shares colonial life for both the free and enslaved members of the community. All Walkway Connections events are free to attend and appropriate for all ages. Walkway Connections is supported in part by the Maurice D. Hinchey Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.

Celebrate the start of a new season with a Sunrise Stroll on the World's Longest Elevated Pedestrian Bridge. During the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the sun rises in line with the Walkway deck, making for a spectacular photo opportunity. We're opening the gates early at 6:30 a.m. on both approaches to allow everyone to enjoy this magnificent experience. There's no cost to attend Sunrise Stroll.

Kids will then dissect real owl pellets to gain a better insight into the world of these amazing nocturnal creatures. All Walkway Connections events are free to attend and appropriate for all ages.
